Neuro Linguistic Programming

NLP has been one of the fastest growing skills that business people are learning. It ranges from how to speak and how to act towards people. The simplest one i can think of is building rapport, Building rapport is used in a lot of business meetings, how do you actually build rapport?

One of the communication theories suggest that people communicate better with common backgrounds and similarities. Building rapport is all about creating a common background so it seems like they have similarities. Mirroring is part of the skill that are commonly used in order to build rapport. Mirroring includes matching gestures, tone, beliefs and tempo. People subconsciously believe that they have something in common, personally i think matching gesture should be done carefully because if it seems to apparent it might offend the other party. What if both party understand the mirroring technique, normally people appreciate the effort you tried to build rapport with them. When rapport is established normally they’ll have better communication. We can see this quite obviously in “talk shows” the host are mirroring the guest to make the guest feel comfortable and will communicate better.

It is essential for the host to mirror their the gesture and also their beliefs (words)since this is kind of setting matching breath will be quite difficult. Here are a few example of “talkshow” hosts that tries to build rapport in order to achieve better communication outcome You can definitely TRY this techniques on your daily communication life and see the DIFFERENCE!!

Example 1 in an Interview

Chafee: Well it started in the 80's and 90's with a much more robust lunch of moderate Republicans. But through time, fewer and fewer and it down to when I got there in the late 90's - 1999 - five of us.

Jon: And now three.

Chafee: Now three.

Jon: That's maybe one of the saddest things I've ever heard.

Chafee: Well what's happened is the southerners have taken over the party. And all those southerners used to be conservative democrats...

Later in the interview (from 3:54 on)

Chafee: The whole caucus just lined up behind the President, and, so the agenda is set by the President. People line up in Congress.

Jon: But why? Why is it so...

Chafee: The primaries pull the contestants to the edges...

Jon: But for everything?!

Chafee: Yeah. For everything!
